Ricky Martin says he’ll get married when Puerto Rico allows it

Puerto Rican singer Ricky Martin says he will marry his partner when his home country legalises gay marriage.

The star has not revealed the name of his long-term boyfriend, but says they would get married if they could.

Appearing on the Larry King show, he said: “I would get married… There are many countries around the world where same-sex marriage is a right. Not in Puerto Rico, unfortunately. And not in many states in America.

“Yes, we could go to Spain and get married. We can go to Argentina and get married. But why do we have to go somewhere else? Why can’t I do it in my country where the laws are – you know, protecting me?”

He added: “I can go to Spain. I have many friends in Spain. And get married. And make it very beautiful and symbolic. But… I [can't] do it in the backyard of my house. I want to have that option. I don’t want to be a second class citizen anymore. I pay my taxes. Why can’t I have that right?”

Martin came out last year. He is currently promoting his autobiography Me, which was published this week in English and Spanish.

Texas gay couple marry by Skype

A gay couple have circumvented Texas’ ban on
gay marriage by marrying over Skype.

Mark Reed and Dante Walkup used the internet software
to link to Washington DC,
where a registrar conducted the ceremony.

The pair said they chose to marry in this way
because they did not want to force
their friends and family to travel to another state.

Mr Reed, a board member of LGBT group GetEqual,
said he and his husband went to Washington DC
to arrange the paperwork and ask marriage equality activist
Sheila Alexander-Reid to officiate.

They rented a hotel room in Dallas for their
October 10th ceremony and another in Washington DC
for Ms Alexander-Reid to read their vows.
The couple received their marriage certificate
in the post later.

Mr Reed told Dallas Voice:
“The reason we wanted to do it this way is
because we wanted to have a wedding here in Dallas
with our family and friends.

“It was very important that all of our family came.
It was the first time they actually met,
even though we’ve been together ten years.
If we had to go to DC,
there’s no way we could have had the people there
who we wanted to be there.”

Although Texas has no law banning marriages performed in this way, the couple know that it can be challenged in court. So they are working with lawyers to draw up statutes to solidify the practice and encourage other gay couples to use it to marry.

Washington (CNN) -- The District of Columbia's same-sex marriage law will go into effect as scheduled this week, after the Supreme Court refused to stop its enforcement.

Chief Justice John Roberts issued a three-page order Tuesday, a day before the law becomes official. He concluded the high court should defer to local matters in the federal district of Washington. And he said a separate ballot initiative to overturn the law would give voters a chance to weigh in on the question.

A group of Washington residents had objected to the Religious Freedom and Civil Marriage Equality Amendment Act, which expands the definition of marriage to include same-sex couples.

Those opponents had argued city residents should have been given a chance to vote on the high-profile issue before the city council passed the measure. They still seek to force a ballot initiative after the law takes effect. Local courts had turned down various lawsuits to block it.

The district's marriage bureau says same-sex couples can begin applying for marriage licenses Wednesday. However, by law, "three full days must pass between the day of application to the day that the license can be issued," the bureau, part of the district's superior court system, says on its Web site, so no marriages would be held this week.

A $35 application fee is waived for couples who are registered domestic partners, although a $10 fee for the license is not, the bureau said.

District of Columbia Mayor Adrian Fenty signed a measure recognizing same-sex marriages as legal in December, after the city council overwhelming passed it. It then had to go through a review period during which Congress had an opportunity to intervene.

The district joins Connecticut, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts and Iowa in allowing same-sex couples to marry.
